Organising a conference?

If you are organising a conference relevant to any aspect of Down's syndrome or to medical issues in other syndrome disorders we may be willing to publicise it on this website. We normally charge a small fee for this, which goes towards the costs of maintaining our information resources. For more information contact info@dsmig.org.uk

Other News and Notices

Do you have the latest edition of the PCHR?
The second edition of the PCHR insert was published two years ago in October 2000. It is considerably revised and, in particular, it includes the new UK growth charts which are significantly different from older charts which were included in the first edition. It has come to our notice that some new parents are still being issued with this now out of date first edition. The 2nd edition is clearly labelled 'Second edition, October 2000' and has the photograph of our 'cover girl' on the front next to a box saying 'Children with Down's syndrome'. For information about ordering click here.

Hip Replacement
Liz Marder reports that one of the most frequent clinical queries she receives these days as medical advisor to the DSA and to DSMIG is about hip replacement. There have been huge advances in this area as regards people with Down's syndrome - both technically and in attitudes. Hip replacement is now firmly on the agenda. The DSMIG Information Service can supply more information.

The Vitamin and Mineral study run from ICH will report results very shortly. Information on www.cddg-downs.org.uk.

Down's syndrome and type 1 Diabetes - Further subjects needed for study
Dr Julian Shield (Paediatrician, Bristol) previously recruited 50 subjects with Down's syndrome and type 1 diabetes through DSMIG and the DSA for a study which focussed in particular on the reasons for the predeliction for autoimmunity among the Down's population. The group is continuing to investigate how trisomy 21 confers increased autoimmunity and now need more subjects to extend the study. Further details »
